DSM is the diagnostic and statistical Manual of Mental disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
It provides diagnostic criteria for mental disorders. It is used in the United Sates and around the world for treatments, pharmaceutical companies, drug regulating agencies, insurance companies and policy makers as well as researchers and clinicians.
Reading but the opening lines in Wikipedia, it appears to be a minefield of conflicting theories that need to be revised as often as new “theories” appear. Some of the classifications get taken “off” and reassigned.
The Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders (CCMD) has their own classifications and use the term Neurasthenia, which is a more central diagnosis and translated as “low spirits”.
It takes into consideration some bodily complaints and fits into the Chinese epistemology of the reasons for disease based on the disharmony of vital organs and imbalance of qi! This makes more sense to me as I have experienced most of these problems and it gives me some ground for airing my observations.
Reading some of the explanation of depression in Wikipedia is unbelievably complex and I can’t imagine what a study of it would entail. Do all psychiatrists go mad? One would think they could.
The body is a complex machine: So is the mind.
However the basic needs of the body (which don’t differ that much from a pig, our closest transplant partner) are surely no more than food, water, exercise and love.
Is that all that is necessary for the mind as well?
Is it not just part of our body and therefore as much at risk of being damaged by chemicals, food additives and the rest of the chemical cocktail that is in our food, drink and air these days?
So why then do we need so many classificationsto address what could be a simple problem of toxicity or /deficiency? Or is that too simple an answer?
My Baby Blues expanded into my entire life.
I would like to tell you of my experience with depression and let you draw your own conclusions. I will add here that I have totally recovered from all depression since removing heavy metals from my body 16 months ago. I had sufferd this since age 26 in one form or another.
As a child I was happy as the next kid because I had no idea that there was or could be anything “wrong” with me.
I was basically healthy though I did suffer high fevers occasionally but recovered well from them.
At age 10 I had a massive reaction to a polio vaccination and recovered from that as well but I do believe this resulted in a weakened immune system and is much to blame for many of my health problems in the future.
At age 13 I started my menses and it was then that the first sign of PMS made its appearance.
At age 18 I had my first child and even though I had a few problems like high blood pressure there was no “baby blues” but severe PMS later on.
At age 21 I had my second child, no problems no depression but the PMS persisted.
At age 26 I had my 3rd and last child and that was when the depression became full blown; it exploded when my baby had her first Vaccination at 2 months of age and I mostly blame lack of sleep for it as my child developed asthma within a few days.
That was the end of sleeping even the few straight hours a breast feeding mum gets.
The asthma was frightening to cope with as I had never been exposed to it in my life.
Looking back I can see some other factors that aggravated her health: My husband was smoking , we had a coal fired combustion heater and we lived in Sunshine, Melbourne, the most misnamed suburb on the planet. There was no sunshine or fresh air, only pollution thick enough to cut with a knife.
After the vaccination my baby was awake 24/7 except for little cat naps which were only long enough for me to tend to the chores and other children.
I went into full blown sleep depravation BUT it was called “post natal blues.”
I got valium and my child got phenergon………
In retrospect what we needed was a therapist to deal with the child’s discomfort and sleeplessness. We needed to do was to detox her tiny body as we should not have exposed her to toxic mercury in the first place at such an early age. (Or at any age) We also found out 14 years later, that she had scoliosis of the spine.
Looking back at it even blind Freddie could see that it was NOT a case of post partum depression or a need for valium for me and phenergen for my poor baby. The only excuse back then was that most of what is KNOWN NOW was not KNOWN THEN.
But the question now is, if all this new information is available why are we still playing with peoples lives and giving them drugs to deal with a problem that could respond much better to different handling?
This makes more sense for Baby Blues:
Some of it based in sleep depravation.
Some of it is based on hormonal imbalance (not treatable by anti depressants)
Some of it due to the intake and absorption of chemicals such as food additives, benzenes, dioxins etc.
Some of it based on intake of toxic elements of mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic aluminium.
Some of it is based on personal unhappiness and a frustrated life.
All of these conditions are exacerbated by lack of sleep and with the new information it also appears that much of it is triggered by an overload of HEAVY METALS IN THE BODY which the body can’t deal with any more, due to the other stressors!
(You will find a link for heavy metals at the bottom of the page)
None of the above problems are going to be fixed by adding more chemicals to the body.
If I had the power to help someone I would:
- Remove ALL of the heavy metals by doing a Heavy Metal Detox with Activated Liquid Zeolite from mother and baby.
- Put the mother onto a super vitamin and mineral supplement.
- Put the mother onto a natural food derived hormonal precursor so that her hormonal system can regenerate.
- Find a physical therapist to deal with the baby’s and mothers physical imbalances.
- Get some home help so that the mother can sleep for as long as it takes to recover her health.
- Remove all toxic products from the house, especially the bathroom, the baby’s nursery and the garage.
- Remove all electromagnetic disturbances from the house as much as possible especially in the baby’s and parent’s room
Use a personal pendant to guard against electromagnetic pollution and to enhance energy. - Drink ionized water and cut out all tea, coffee and soft drinks and of course alcohol.
These are just a few steps that pay dividends and put the mother onto the path of good health. I wish someone had offered me those choices back 39 years ago!
The brain is just another organ, sensitive to all the pollutants as are all our cells and it is strange that we think of it as something apart from our bodies.
It responds to health giving foods very quickly but is very much overlooked in todays treatments as is the power of good nutrition.
Why should a lack of Vitamin C result in clinically acknowledged scurvy and lack of calcium result in osteoporosis and lack of Vitamin B be the recognized culprit in Pellagra and the lack of iron is a recognized problem in anemia?
Yet when we expand those areas into lack of overall nutrition or overload of toxic elements, it is conveniently discounted and denigrated to the ravings of the natural health nuts?
You can’t have it both ways. Either nutrition makes a difference in our bodies or it does not.
If it does not, then we should ignore the conveniently “recognized and pharmaceutically owned and manufactured” elements such as iron pills and Vit C and B or injections.
If the brain is part of the body then it is as much at risk of developing “symptoms” (depression, mania, dementia, melancholy, bi polar etc etc etc) as the rest of the body does with chronic diseases, which have been reversed by adding missing nutrients to the diet.
Is it time we had another look at the baby blues and did something healthy about it rather than start the mothers on a round of drugs?

. Bowen therapy is brilliant at addressing
colic, asthma, and skeletal problems. Gentle baths with a drop of Lavender Essential oil do much to settle the child. NON toxic food, as in breast milk from a healthy mother will take care of digestive problems.

This story is just to point out the utter stupidity of the treatment.
I was young, NOT educated in pathology, biology or anatomy and followed stupidly the stupid diagnosis and treatment.

Remember there have been depressed and mad people through history, trace most of their lives and you’ll see painters, hatters, writers, dentists, dictators etc.
Most of them could quite easily have been suffering from an overload of heavy metals as these are not exclusive to our society.
They have been with us for eons. mercury is a natural outfall from volcanic activity, lead has been in paint and dishes, drinking vessels bullets and horseshoes and nails. There are many commonplace articles full of heavy metals. (See heavy Metals and their Symptoms link at bottom of page)
But it is the OVERLOAD that is affecting us now. Coupled with chemical and electromagnetic pollution it’s no wonder our systems suffer.
The brain is just another organ, sensitive to all the pollutants as are all our cells.
Why should a lack of Vitamin C result in clinically acknowledged scurvy, and lack of calcium result in osteoporosis and lack of Vitamin B be the recognized culprit in Pellagra and the lack of iron result in anemia?

If it does not, then don’t’ prescribe the conveniently “recognized and pharmaceutically owned” elements such as iron, Vit C and B or injections of Vit B!

How much would you give to get off the deadly depression wagon?
